Author Interview
Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
Fractured is the story of two sisters who are very different. On a trip to repair their rocky relationship, they find that they must face a dark secret from their past before it takes their very souls. It’s the first horror novel I’ve ever written, and it was a challenge. Some parts scared me to write!
What inspired you to write it?
I had a nightmare of it. It scared me so much, I woke up and managed to fall back asleep, only to continue the dream. That’s when I knew I had a scary story!
How did you come up with the idea for the cover?
Whit&Ware Design did the cover and I think it’s gorgeous. It’s left open for interpretation, but I look at it as one of the sister’s souls being torn apart. Very spooky. I love it.
If it was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?
Good question! Hmmm… Saoirse Ronan would be Bash while Emilia Clarke would be Lily. Does that sound like something you’d like to watch?

Oh yes, absolutely! I love those gals! :)
What is it about this genre that appeals to you so much?
It takes a lot for something to creep me out or scare me, so if it does, I’d say it was a success. I’d like to be a success to my readers, so it’s challenging.
What made you want to become an author?
I’ve always told stories. When I was 9 years old, I sat down at my parents’ computer and started writing. I haven’t been able to stop, haha.
How do you come up with character names?
I have a mental folder where I collect names that appeal to me. Bash’s full name is Bathsheba, which I loved when I heard about it. It is an uncommon name, and I liked being able to show how different characters impacted her life based on the nicknames they called her. Lily is named for the flower as a bit of an ironic name.
Name one of your all-time favourite books?
Dune by Frank Herbert will always be number one for me. Followed by Stephen King’s The Shining. And then Harry Potter.
Who, or what, inspires you?
There’s nothing more inspiring to me than someone achieving their dreams. I think about how hard they had to work, how badly they must have wanted it, and when they do achieve, it’s wonderful.
Where is your favourite place to write?
At my desk! I have a nice desk and everything in the place. My cat usually sits on my lap while I write. Sometimes that’s okay, but sometimes she’s really needy and gets in the way.
What is your favourite movie that was based on a book?
My all-time favourite movie is Who Framed Roger Rabbit? which happens to be based on the book Who Censored Roger Rabbit? I admittedly haven’t read the book, but I love that movie so much.
Name two of your favourite authors.
Stephen King and Edgar Allan Poe.
If you could have a dinner party with any authors from any time in history, who would you choose and why?
I’d choose George R.R. Martin and J.R.R. Tolkien just to hear them stumble over each other’s names. Then I’d have tea with William Shakespeare, JK Rowling, Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe, and Stephen King.
Tell us a random fact about yourself.
Part of Fractured is set in Steamboat Springs where I had a skiing accident when I was six years old. I accidentally got poked in the eye with a ski pole. So when I needed a setting for my horror novel, it seemed like a good place! I’ve been back since, and it’s beautiful and lovely, but it’s still scary for me.
Who would play you in the movie about your life?
Can I say Jennifer Lawrence? Because I’d like to be as cool as her.
Tell us an interesting fact about where you live.
I just moved to Birmingham, Alabama from Auckland, New Zealand. And the way the Alabama does barbecue versus New Zealand is sooo different!
What are your (writing) plans for the future?
I’m writing the sequel to my novel, Death is but a Dream at the moment. I have a superhero deconstruction on the backburner and another horror novel on the way too. It’s just finding the time to write.
Tell us one thing that's on your bucket list.
I want to live in Venice for a year and live in Tokyo for a year. That’s not too hard, right?
Favourite myth / fairytale?
I’ve read so many in my time! Death is but a Dream is based on Greek mythology, and I love that world. I’ve started reading up on Japanese Urban Legends, which are really scary. I highly recommend them.
Who did you want to be when you were a kid?
I wanted to be a female Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtle so I could marry Leonardo. Nowadays, I’d go for Raphael or Donatello. It wouldn’t have worked out between Leo and I.
Thank you for having me! This was a fun interview, so I hope you have fun reading it!

I certainly did, Erin! Thanks for being here :)
Sci-fi junkie, video game nerd, and wannabe manga artist, Erin Hayes writes a lot of things. Sometimes she writes books, like the fantasy mystery Death is but a Dream and the sci-fi middle grade book Jacob Smith is Incredibly Average.
