Author Interview
Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
I’d love to! TEMTPED is the 2nd installment in The BirthRight Series—and as one blogger said in her review—“it blows book 1 out of the water!” This new book still has some of the same sweetness and humor with the characters that book 1 had, but it’s also darker, has a touch more “steam”, a bit more grit, more magic, and multiple POVs. The basic premise of TEMPTED, is that our main character, Chloe, is torn between Good and Evil. And when Chloe’s powers are stolen and she loses her magical connection to her family, some of the characters you’ve grown to love from book 1, take over and tell the story while she can’t. It adds a whole new layer to the book that readers, so far, can’t get enough of. And it was so much fun to write.
What inspired you to write it?
Aside from the amazing family, the romance, the magical storyline, and the kick-ass plot twists in the series, the main things that inspired me, were the positive messages I wanted to weave through it. So many books these days are loaded with hate, anger, jealousy, violence, unhealthy relationships, self-loathing, and poor choices. Are those things often part of life? Absolutely! But I wanted to write a series that focused more on the good things, so that maybe a few teens would be filled with hope when they’re finished. Or maybe adults would remember what it’s like to see the genuine good in people—and what it feels like to do the right thing.
In addition, I also tried to write these books in a way that feels more like your “friend” is telling you the story, instead of an author. The hope was that perhaps it might appeal to teens/people who aren’t necessarily big readers. It might grab their attention more easily, instead of boring them with page after page of description. And I’ve already had some success with it, and I can’t tell you just how happy that makes me.
The amazing thing is, this series that was created mainly for teens, is loved by ALL ages, including men. Which still shocks me! But it makes me so happy I followed my heart with the positive messages—and the organic and fresh writing style. It might not be for everyone, but it definitely does have an audience who are hungry for it.
How did you come up with the idea for the cover?
Each of my covers are from a scene in the book. I’m a bit neurotic about the cover being a true representation of what’s inside, conveying not only something that happens in the story, but an emotion, as well.
If it was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?
This is an easy one, as I’ve been plotting this since I started the series a few years ago: Chloe (Claire Holt), Hunter (Robbie Amell), Xander (Matt Lanter), Ash & Aidan (Daniel Sharman), Dhelia (Phoebe Tonkin), and Dru (Chris Wood). Can you imagine a hotter, more talented, cast?
What is it about this genre that appeals to you so much?
I LOVE stories with paranormal elements. It’s my favorite to read as well, and usually my favorite type of movie/TV show. I grew up in a haunted house, so anything supernatural has always fascinated me.
What made you want to become an author?
I was honestly born a storyteller. When I was a kid, I was always weaving some sort of tale, or writing poems, songs, and short stories. My mind never stops coming up with new ideas, so it’s simply second nature to me.
How do you come up with character names?
I scour names for days. Usually a first name will jump out at me, but many times, I use a name generator for last names, to see what sounds the best. I have this weird obsession with naming my characters BEFORE I can start writing. So the names are very important. But I will admit, there are a few names in the series that are based on real people from my life (i.e. the doctors and teachers from TETHERED). It was my way to pay tribute to them.
Name one of your all-time favorite books?
Hands down, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE!
Who, or what, inspires you?
Books, TV, and movies inspire me. The more I absorb, the more it sparks my creativity.
Where is your favorite place to write?
My super comfy, leather recliner in my living room, where the TV is always on for background noise.
What is your favorite movie that was based on a book?
Of course, I’ll have to say PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, yet again. I’ve watched it a couple hundred times, and that’s no exaggeration.
Name two of your favorite authors.
Jane Austen (Duh!) and Darynda Jones
If you could have a dinner party with any authors from any time in history, who would you choose and why?
Jane Austen, for sure. I’d love to pick her brain about what life experiences lead to many of her characters and stories. I mean, can you imagine hearing about the man Mr. Darcy was based on? But it would also be pretty cool to have dinner with William Shakespeare. A few years ago, I learned I’m actually a direct descendent of his, and I’d love to know if we have anything else in common, besides our passion for writing.
Tell us a random fact about yourself.
How about, scary movies do NOT scare me! Never! Not even one. It’s sort of a game I play with myself, to see if something will freak me out. But sadly, it never does. I did have crazy nightmares once when I fell asleep watching SAW, but I don’t think that counts. Though, there’s this new movie that opens soon (Deliver us from Evil) I’ve got high hopes for.
Who would play you in the movie about your life?
Oh my, that’s a goooooooood one! Hmmmmmmm...let me think. Well, I’m a big, sarcastic dork most of the time, so Cameron Diaz or Katherine Heigl would have no trouble showing the world my goofball side.
Tell us an interesting fact about where you live.
Happy Valley, baby! Home of the Penn State Nittany Lions!!
What are your (writing) plans for the future?
Well, The BirthRight Series has 4 “planned” books, with the potential of 6-8 additional books, one for each character (IF the series takes off). Next year, however, I’ll be finishing 2 stand-alone Paranormal Romances, followed by 2 different hybrid Dystopian/Urban Fantasies, one YA, and one NA. I like to think of them as “Dysturbian”! LOL
Tell us one thing that's on your bucket list.
I’m desperate to travel the world! For research, of course. :)
Favorite myth / fairytale?
Are Vampires considered a myth? I lurv me some Vamps!!
Who or what did you want to be when you were a kid?
I always wanted to be a vet. I’m a HUGE animal lover!

Release Date: December 2014
About the Author:
Brandi lives in central Pennsylvania with her fur-ball cats (Onyx and Klepto), where she spends most of her time attached to her laptops, reading books, appeasing her sweet tooth, and watching TV for motivation.
Growing up in a haunted house inspired Brandi’s fascination with the paranormal, so it only made sense that she’d write Urban Fantasy books for both teens and adults.
Brandi hasn’t been lucky enough to meet her soul mate (yet), so she writes paranormal tales of those who have. Her stories combine magical elements with real-life issues, strong female characters, semi-old fashioned men and family values, woven together and told from an emotional, first-person perspective. She enjoys writing sweet stories that teach girls it’s okay to speak your mind and be independent, career-driven, and not worry about fitting in to society’s mold.
In addition to the BirthRight Novels, she also has four additional adventures she’ll be writing over the next few years, so stay-tuned.
