Do dreams ever inspire your writing? What did you last dream about?
I actually haven’t gotten inspired by my dreams to write and I am horrible at recalling dreams. However I am a huge day dreamer, always have been, gotten in trouble a few times because of it in school. My day dreams totally inspire my writing. I usually keep a pen and some type of paper near me to capture whatever I zone out about.

I've been writing since I was 11. My sixth grade English teacher gave us a writing project and really encouraged me to write after reading the story I turned in. I have countless short stories since that time. It's always fun to go back and see how far I've come as a writer. To see what 13 year old me liked to write about compared to the me now. My first published piece was a short story in 2012 published in the quarterly magazine Pen In Hand but this is the first novel I published which first came out in March of this year.
What is it about 'chick lit' that appeals to you the most? Do you read other genres?

I am a chick lit girl all the way. It’s not your typical romance novel which I find a bit sappy, there’s some quirkiness to them and comedy that I love. And many of them have romance as a side part of it but it might not be the sole purpose of the novel which is nice too.
I've been reading some form of chicklit since I was little, be it Sweet Valley or Baby Sitter's Club. I am also a huge horror and urban fantasy reader as well. Steven King to Ilona Andrews. Love it. I'm very much into character development and anything dealing with the supernatural.

The Mission is about two gal pals who follow what are considered “the rules” in finding Mr. Right. Sheila is very pro following the rules and Denise is reluctantly going along. Each chapter is a different rule narrated by either Sheila or Denise. We see how following common rules given to women in dating in our society may not be a one size fits all type of thing.

Conversations with my friends about dating. When we were out for drinks dishing, we always ended up talking about dating and guys. Some of my own dating experiences were inspiration although I’m not telling stories from actual experience more so exaggerations of events or jut sparks from an aspect of a date. I also love Sex and the City but I wanted to write something from a more diverse perspective in a town not like NY with characters that were more relatable to my environment. My novel is set in DC which has its own culture with dating which is higher amount of women and a very transitory population. New people are always coming here and from all over the world. It makes it a very interesting and sometimes difficult place to date.

Outside of my family and friends not yet but then again my novel is an ebook so who knows what someone I past might be reading on their e-reader!

Sheila would be Megan Goode or Tika Sumpter and Denise might be Kandyse McClure or Nichole Beharie. Although new faces would be something I’d be really interested in.

I did enjoy The Devil Wears Prada (I actually liked the book more than the movie although Meryl Streep was awesome).

There are a ton of urban fantasy writers I wish would have their work turn into something, maybe a TV series. Illona Andrews Kate Daniel’s series is outstanding. Her character is the anti Twilight/True Blood heroine and the vampires are very different in this series.

Anywhere, during lunch, on vacation, in travel, at home on my bed- although TV can be a distraction.

I always wanted to be either a teacher or a lawyer. I am a non practicing attorney now doing civil rights work. I still plan to teach, maybe college level, one day.
