The Vampire, the Hunter, and the Girl by Martin Lastrapes

The Vampire, the Hunter, and the Girl by Martin Lastrapes
(The Vampire and the Hunter Trilogy #1)
Publication date: March 18th 2015
Genres: Adult, Horror, Paranormal

Adam and Jesus (the vampire and the hunter) have an innate antagonism, which is only heightened once they discover they’re competing for the affections of the same girl. Olivia (the girl) is an aspiring author struggling to write a vampire novel. What none of them yet know is there’s a menacing force looming that will change the course of their lives forever. With the first installment of The Vampire and the Hunter Trilogy, Martin Lastrapes has created a vampire tale that is scary, funny, thrilling, and satisfying to the very last drop.

Hi Martin! Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
The Vampire, the Hunter, and the Girl is a novel that honors the traditional lore of vampires with a fresh and unique take on the genre. It’s about a vampire and a vampire hunter who are in love with the same girl—and the menacing force that will change the course of their lives forever.

What inspired you to write it?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the primary inspiration. It’s my favorite TV show of all-time and really solidified my love of vampire fiction.

How did you come up with the idea for the cover?
The brilliant Rowan Stocks-Moore designed the cover. The design was entirely his idea. I simply told him what the story was about, shared a few major themes, and gave him an idea of what aesthetics I was interested in seeing. He did everything else.

If it was made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters?
As you might imagine, I spend a lot of time thinking about this. While I can imagine any number of talented actors bringing my characters to life, here are a few that come to mind:
Adam: Robert Downey, Jr.
Jesus: Jay Hernandez
Olivia: Aubrey Plaza
Dracula: Jim Parsons

Is it part of a series or is it a stand-alone novel?
It is book one of The Vampire and the Hunter Trilogy. All three books are complete and Book Two, The Vampire, the Hunter, and the Witch was published on July 4, 2015. Book Three will be published on Halloween 2015.

Where is the novel set and why did you choose to set it there?
The novel is set in the Inland Empire, which is a large region of Southern California. I grew up in the Inland Empire, so I’m familiar with it, which is why I like writing about it.

What is it about this genre that appeals to you so much?
I love the vampire genre, because, while it’s fantasy, it allows for the telling of very poignant, powerful, and satisfying tales of human drama.

What made you want to become an author?
I was encouraged to become a writer from my friend and mentor S. Kay Murphy. Kay is an author herself, but when we met she was my first English professor. The spark of inspiration she gave me eventually evolved into a love of prose fiction, which naturally led to becoming an author.

How do you come up with character names?
Honestly, with very few exceptions, I put little-to-no thought at all into character names. I usually just slap the first name that comes to mind. I figure once I develop the character, the name will organically become part of him, her, or it.

Name one of your all-time favourite books?

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey is one of my all-time favorite books. From the characters, the story, the setting, the language—all of it—this book gives me the full experience that I always hope to have when I read a novel.

Who, or what, inspires you?
All the wonderful authors that ingrained a love of books in me are my inspiration. I want to be just like them with a library of books I’ve written that inspire, enthrall, and entertain readers the way I’ve been inspired, enthralled, and entertained my whole life by the authors I love.

Where is your favourite place to write?
My favorite place to write is on my computer. Geographically, I can be anywhere, so long as I have my computer to write with.

What is your favourite movie that was based on a book?

The Shawshank Redemption is without question my favorite film adaptation. It’s based on Stephen King’s novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. I didn’t know it was an adaptation for several years after I saw it. I eventually read Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption and contend that it’s the best writing King has ever done.

Name two of your favourite authors.
Tom Robbins and Tim O’Brien. I’ll happily read anything they write.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I had a mediocre career as a high school wrestler. I was just good enough to be on the varsity team, but not good enough to excel at it.

Who would play you in the movie about your life?
I dunno. Hulk Hogan? We’re both bald.

Tell us an interesting fact about where you live.
In 1996, President Bill Clinton gave a speech at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga while I was a student there.

What are your (writing) plans for the future?
I’m currently working on a novel about the circus that engages fantasy, romance, mystery, and comedy. I don’t have a timeframe for it, but I anticipate the book will be published sometime in 2017.

Tell us one thing that's on your bucket list.
I would love to give a TED talk. That seems like fun.

Favourite myth/fairytale?
Batman.

Who/What did you want to be when you were a kid?
Batman.
