When I started writing Interred back in December 2011, I never envisioned the book would turn into a series. It was actually my publisher who suggested, perhaps, I would like to turn the idea into a trilogy. I didn’t really have to think too much about writing two more books, as I was utterly in love with Baxter, Declan and Jack.
I pondered a lot about the characters and where the story should go as we started editing Interred. At the time I didn’t know where it would end. In my naïveté I never really thought about the time when I would have to write the last book in the series and say goodbye to the characters. I was too focused on the story and how to get from point A to point B.
Once Fissure’s publishing date arrived and I started working on Alternate, the idea of saying goodbye to Baxter, Declan and Jack hit me. It was almost as if I’d jumped out of a plane without a parachute. For a while I felt quite hopeless as I tried to get timelines right and made sure that the story flowed. More than once, I remember telling my husband that I couldn’t do it. Of course what he understood was different than what I meant. He offered encouraging words so hopefully I could finish the book. I hold those words close to my heart to this day, and probably will hold them dear throughout my life. However, the truth behind my words to him was that I didn’t want to say goodbye to the characters.
I actually correlated handing the last edited copy of the manuscript to my editor to the feeling of my kids leaving home. My whole body was attacked by a deep longing and sadness that I could only equal to the empty nest syndrome. Even though I was looking forward to readers finding out how the series would end, with each review I move further and further away from Baxter, Declan, Jack and the rest of the cast of characters who inhabit the Chronicles of the Interred world.
In a bid to stop those feelings from coursing through me, I wrote a few short stories. But in reality, nothing compared to hanging out with Baxter and Jack in my head. As the promotional tour for Alternate started, I made notes of events that I felt would happen in their future. I know their story has been told, but I just need to know that in the end they’re safe. And so, sometimes in the dead of night when I should be sleeping, instead I’m stealing glances into the future of the Ashdowns and Huxtables, making sure that all is well and as it should be through Time and space.
Marilyn Almodóvar is the YA Author of the Time Traveling series, Chronicles of the Interred. Interred (2013), Fissure (2014) Alternate (2015).
