Ten things about writing Melting the Ice Queen’s Heart.
1. You can crack a chest without a lot of instruments. This is where medical research comes in handy. I’m not a medical professional. I was a law clerk before I became a writer. It was kind of intimidating, but I love doing research. Originally in the opening scene of Melting I had my hero crack open a man’s chest in front of the board of directors, much to the heroine’s chagrin. Only that wasn’t logical, so I changed it to my hero inserting a chest tube in front of the board of directors while they’re racing him to surgery.
2. I had to learn to make a seafood chowder. I never learned, but I love seafood. My mother hates it, so we didn’t get it much growing up. So I learned how to make a nice, creamy seafood chowder so when my heroine made one, I knew how to explain it. I also learned the difference between a bisque and chowder. Chowder is chunky, bisque is pureed.
3. Pinterest is my friend. Before Pinterest I would print out pictures and make a story board. Pinterest lets me do all of that without printing and wasting paper. Hooray! So Pinterest is my friend. You can see my boards here: http://www.pinterest.com/amyruttan/
4. One thing I learned from a cab driver in San Francisco is that October is hotter than July. I also learned from a certain New Zealand friend and fellow author that San Francisco in the evening in July is bloody cold. For us Canadians it was warm!

6. I like Harleys because my Dad is a Harley fanatic. That’s all he’s ever driven. In the winter he would walk or take the bus. So when a hero of mine rides a bike. It’s always a Harley and my father taught me to know their distinct sound. I also have to use Harley’s because one time I wrote a book where the heroine drove an Indian and I almost was disowned. LOL
7. Pink is the bane of Dr. Gavin Brice’s existence. I tortured him a bit with the overuse of pink.
8. I finished writing the book when I was on a writing retreat with several author friends up in Collingwood, Ontario. I remember during one session I said I was going to brainstorm and I ended up passed out on my keyboard. I still haven’t lived that one down.
9. My first book took 10 rounds of revisions. Melting the Ice Queen’s Heart only took 1. It was a proud moment for me.
10. Melting the Ice Queen’s Heart had a different title when I was writing it and handed it in. I suck at titling. My original title was Love Without Borders. Okay, that wasn’t as bad as Safe in His Hands’ original title which was City Surgeon, Wilderness Doctor and my July release Pregnant with the Soldier’s Son was originally titled Home Front Surprise. Like I said, I’m not the best with titles.
