Do dreams ever inspire your writing? What did you last dream about?
They used to!! Twenty years ago, I had epic dreams that would last all night. I’d wake up remembering every detail. I wrote a few down, but that was pre-computer days and the notes have gotten lost. My fave was a family saga that started during WWII. Still haunts me!!

When did you first start writing? And when were you first published?
In junior high, I mapped out a plan to write a page/day. I think I made it all the way to fourteen days until my own blossoming love life got in the way. I sold my first book seventeen years ago—which means I’m getting OLD!! LOL!!

What is it about 'chick lit' that appeals to you the most? Do you read other genres?
To me, 1st Person POV gives an intimacy that I love!! It makes me feel like I’m not just reading the story, but immersed in it.

Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
I’m working on the sequel to Control and Possess . It’s called Rebound, and is the story of Carol and Nathan who are both on the rebound from loving Ella and Liam who launched the series.

What inspired you to write it?
Nathan and Carol had been such good friends to Ella and Liam that they deserved to have their story told!!

Have you ever spotted anyone reading your books anywhere?
Yes—one afternoon at our neighborhood pool, I spotted a stranger reading one of my Harlequin Americans. I was CRAZY EXCITED, and told her I’d written the book she was reading. She eyed me funny, said that was nice, then kept right on reading. I felt uncomfortable the rest of the day!! LOL!!

If your latest book was made into a film, who would you cast?
Ryan Gosling would play Liam, and my dream Ella is a fashion model whose photo I have on my Pinterest board for Control and Possess, but I can’t seem to find who she is. All at once, she manages to look gorgeous, yet haunted and fragile. Wish, wish, wish I knew who she is!!

What's your favourite Chick Lit book that made it to the big screen?
Gotta love Bridget Jones!!

What were the last two books you read?
Tracy Wolff’s Ruined & Addicted!! So GOOD!!

Name one female author who you think deserves to be better known.
Rogenna Brewer. She’s so talented. I would love to see her career SOAR!!

Where do you write?
Ducking my head in shame . . . I have a perfectly good office, but spend most of my days parked on the living room sofa with my laptop and three little dogs.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? And did you follow the dream?
Sadly, no, I’m not an astronaut or archaeologist. LOL!! But I’ll never give up the dream!!

In the movie of your life, who would play you?
Sandra Bullock!!

Four years ago…
There she was. My boo. My wifey. My ace boon-coon. Whatever people or I was willing to call her, minus the official title of wife, she was. And there she was tonguing some other poor soul down in the middle of the Japanese steakhouse she’d been fighting to get me to take her to. I wasn’t down for all that teppanyaki and sushi. I always passed, but that ain’t stop her from going out and finding her another dude to take her there while she used the guise of “shopping with the girls” to keep me from being on to her games. I eventually realized that when she kept coming home glowing with no shopping bags, she wasn’t really shopping.
She ain’t know I followed her this time. Well, technically, I wasn’t really following her. Ain’t like I waited ten minutes after she left to hop into my car, turn off my headlights, and tail her from streetlight to streetlight while I stayed two cars behind. I was smart and less crazy about all this. Outside of her credit cards not being maxed out on Prada bags and Gucci shoes, I had no real proof that she was stepping out on me. I couldn’t justify, to my mama or myself, that I had a reason to stalk my own woman. However, I had to consider the asinine possibility that my congeniality may have forced her into the arms of Mr. Convenience. I thought up the least likely place she’d expect me to spot her, grabbed the darkest table I could find, and posted up.
The first hour there, I was amped. I sat there with the menu covering my face, dodging waiters and customers who ain’t feel comfortable with a black man hiding out in a dimly lit booth of a Japanese steakhouse. Every time a woman walked in, I hid my face and gorged on saké. The second and third hour, I couldn’t dodge the waiters anymore. I had to order something or risk being thrown out for looking plain weird. After filling up on Kobe beef, rice and broccoli, I lost the initial zeal I had. I started to settle into the notion that I was paranoid and my woman really was out there watching her money and enjoying the comforts of window-shopping.
The fourth hour, I asked for the check. To my server’s delight, he dropped my dinner bill on my table and skipped away. As I pulled a few bills from my wallet, I noticed a tall, statuesque woman stroll in. Large bumblebee shades covered her eyes and rested on top of her high, taupe cheekbones. She wore a tight black dress that pushed her breasts together and cuffed her ass in all the right places. Her brown, curly hair bounced on top of her shoulders as she glided to an empty table. I stared her down and watched her remove her glasses. Bright, almond-shaped chestnut eyes, shaded by long overlapping eyelashes, almost took my breath away.

First off, thank you so much for being a part of the blog tour to promote my Loveswept Contemporary Romance, Loving You Is Easy. And now to get to your questions.

Do dreams ever inspire your writing? What did you last dream about?
Dreams don’t typically inspire my writing. But once I’m into writing a story I do start to dream up scenes, probably because the story is the last thing on my mind before I drift off to sleep. Lately, with a book out in October, Loving You Is Easy releasing in December, and a lot of family stuff going on, the dreams I remember are often ones where I’m desperately looking for something I can’t find or running somewhere I never get to. I’d much rather be dreaming about Channing Tatum!!!!

When did you first start writing? And when were you first published?
I started writing in 2007, at night, after a full day of work and after my three children and husband had gone to bed. I sold to Harlequin Medical Romance in 2010 and my first book was published in 2011.

What is it about 'chick lit' that appeals to you the most? Do you read other genres?
I love to read about strong, contemporary women. I love a mix of humor and hot sex. I enjoy reading contemporary, historical, and erotic romance. Although I’ll pretty much read any type of romance if the story is good and the sex is hot!

Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
Loving You Is Easy is about a soldier, Shane Develin, and a middle school teacher, Brooke Ellstein, who start up a pen pal relationship while Shane is overseas for his fourth tour of combat duty in Afghanistan. Brooke is from an upper class family. Her dad is a prominent New York politician. Shane has blue collar roots and his dad drives a New Jersey Transit bus. If not for the pen pal program their paths in life would never have crossed. But now that they have, can two people who are totally wrong for each other find a lifetime of happiness together? (I’ll give you a hint: YES!)

What inspired you to write it?
Well, I love soldier heroes. And I’m a little obsessed with ‘Soldier Coming Home’ videos on YouTube. A while back, while chatting with Sue Grimshaw, before she became my editor, she’d mentioned she’d like to see a story about cyberbullying. So I sat down to come up with an idea that would combine a variation of cyberbullying with a soldier hero returning home from the war. An odd combination perhaps, but I made it work.

Have you ever spotted anyone reading your books anywhere?
People have sent me pictures of themselves with my books, but I’ve never seen anyone reading one of my books in person. How cool would that be? And since Harlequin Medical Romances aren’t sold in stores in the U.S. and all my other books have been published digitally, I’ve never actually seen my book on a store shelf in the U.S. Maybe it’s time for some international travel!

Who designs your covers?
To date, my publishers have designed my covers. But I am thrilled with what they came up with for Loving You Is Easy! It’s so romantic, which is exactly what I’d asked for.

If your latest book was made into a film, who would you cast?
Hmmm. That’s a tough one. The inspiration for my heroine, Brooke Ellstein, is Sierra Deaton from Alex and Sierra, a singing duo who won the third season of The X Factor USA. For my tough soldier hero, Shane Develin, I think maybe Mark Wahlberg as he was in his role in Lone Survivor.

What's your favourite Chick Lit book that made it to the big screen?
Sex and the City. But I also loved Confessions of a Shopaholic.

What were the last two books you read?
Hold on Tight by Serena Bell and The Laird by Grace Borrowes

Name one female author who you think deserves to be better known.
Wow, that’s tough because I have so many talented author friends. But I’d have to go with Claudia Connor, author of Worth the Fall. I loved this story and can’t believe it’s Claudia’s first book.

Where do you write?
I’m in New York. In the warm weather months I typically write on my laptop out on my screened-in-porch. In the winter months I typically write at my desk – bundled up in layers of clothes with a knit blanket on my lap and maybe a small dog.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? And did you follow the dream?
Growing up I wanted to be a nurse. And yes, that is what I became.

In the movie of your life, who would play you?
Sandra Bullock as she was in the Miss Congeniality movies. Tough but sensitive. Funny yet sincere. Doing what she has to do to get the job done.

Erin’s heart was already slamming against her ribcage when she reached Zander’s brothers, murmuring her prepared words—“I’m sorry for your loss. He was a good man.”—as she moved quickly past them. Even if they remembered her, they had that glazed-over look that indicated they’d already seen way too many people today, and she was simply another face in the crowd. Not too surprising. The brothers had both been in their late twenties when she’d known Zander, and deployed for most of that time. His sister, Karen, recognized her immediately, however. She was only six years older than Zander. It had seemed like an impossible age difference four years ago, but now, not so much. And as Karen turned to see Erin approach, her gaze flashed with open curiosity. “Erin,” she said, nodding. Her manner seemed cool, though, perfunctory, and Erin rushed into the exact explanation she’d just convinced herself she didn’t need to give.
“I’m so sorry, Karen,” she said, drawing on every ounce of serene, professional distance she’d learned from putting her own work up to scrutiny week after week in art school. “Your mom let me know about the funeral. I—”
“No, no—thank you for being here, of course.” Karen didn’t cut her off as much as give her an out, but Erin shut up anyway. Wow, this was maybe the dumbest idea ever. Zander wasn’t going to help her. Zander probably never wanted to see her again. No one in his family did. It was only what she deserved.
She wondered if he ever thought about her anymore. If he still blamed her for everything that had happened that last summer. Not that he shouldn’t, of course. But still, Zander hadn’t known all that she’d been dealing with back then, hadn’t known what his crazy, out-of-control antics were costing her every time she saw him put himself in danger—put others in danger. Back then, no one knew how much of a train wreck her life really was.
She still didn’t want anyone to know.

Hello, Suzy! Thank you so much for interviewing me today. ☺ I’m excited that you are part of the tour (and I love your site!) Since the holidays are crazy, let’s just jump right in!.

Tell me. Do dreams ever inspire your writing? What did you last dream about?
Dreams FREQUENTLY inspire my writing. In fact, two different stories I’ve written have been the result of a dream. My last dream, sadly, had me traveling with my best friend and we (randomly) were being chased by special forces operatives… no idea why. But this could be coming to a book plot near you soon! ☺

When did you first start writing? And when were you first published?
I first started writing when I was about 10 or 11 years old—what we would call “Fan Fiction” today. I was first published in 2013 in Young Adult historical (under the name Jennifer McGowan), and my first romance was published this year!

What is it about 'chick lit' that appeals to you the most? Do you read other genres?
I read many other genres, but I think “chick lit” is interesting because it’s about the woman’s journey as much as the romance. You get to travel with the heroine on her own voyage of discovery.

Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
Absolutely! WANT IT is the story of artist and new-grad Erin Connelly who needs a hero—badly—but the only one available is her ex-boyfriend turned Army Ranger Zander James. He’s hot and he’s capable, but he also hates her. Which makes asking him for help to save her mom all that much more difficult. But having no other choice, she does. . . and discovers that having a hero on her hands is an adventure waiting to happen.

What inspired you to write it?
This story actually grew out of the characters. Once I latched onto Zander as being Erin’s ex boyfriend—and a military hero as well—his story fell into place. WANT IT has more “action-adventure” than my other books, but was so much fun to write!

Have you ever spotted anyone reading your books anywhere?
Ha! I have not—yet! But my books are available only via ebook right now, so it’s a little more difficult to tackle someone to see what’s on her Kindle. ☺

Who designs your covers?
The team at Random House created the cover look for the Rule Breakers books—and they keep getting better and better!

If your latest book was made into a film, who would you cast?
Great question! For Erin, I would probably go with Natalie Portman, and for Zander… Channing Tatum! Because, why not?

What's your favourite Chick Lit book that made it to the big screen?
The one I’m curious to see is the adaptation of Austenland… but I heard the movie wasn’t terribly good, so maybe I should just fan-fic that one in my head. ☺

What were the last two books you read?
Ha! You don’t want to know—they were research books for some upcoming projects and are pretty daggone dark. On the fiction front, I’ve been hooked on James Rollins for a few months now—reading his entire series!

Name one female author who you think deserves to be better known.
Bria Quinlan. She writes funny, emotional adult and YA love stories that I absolutely adore. Her amazon page is here.

Where do you write?
Usually on the couch---unless I’m in a recliner, or on my bed, or (gasp!) at my desk. I have also been known to write in coffee shops and breakfast diners, and occasionally in the car. Sometimes even while driving, but only under duress!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? And did you follow the dream?
An author! And yes, I did. It took awhile, but I got there!

Tina Fey—because it would need to be someone with a sense of humor. ☺

Ambushed by Aunt Aideen, Grayce Walters was trapped. The bonds of social pressure gripped tighter around her wrists and ankles, holding her captive in the kitchen chair. She couldn’t escape tonight’s séance.
Dressed in a flowing cobalt-blue caftan, Aunt Aideen ceremoniously placed a scarred, black box on the table and then carefully opened a chest lined in red velvet and raised a glimmering crystal ball into the air. “This Keek-Stane has been passed down through generations of Scottish witches.”
The enormous kitchen suddenly went airless. Grayce gulped for a breath. Mitzi, who had been sleeping under the table, protectively covered Grayce’s feet with her paws.
Grayce knew nothing about tarot cards or witches. Why hadn’t Davis warned her that his aunt considered herself a witch? Grayce had recognized Aunt Aideen as a gifted intuitive, but not a witch, whatever that meant.
Aunt Aideen placed the ball in the center of the table spread with tarot cards. “The Keek-Stane guides me in the reading of the cards.”
A call to a suspicious fire had interrupted the cozy dinner with her boyfriend, his aunt and dog. If Davis had stayed, she’d be eating dessert instead of having a metaphysical experience.
Aunt Aideen’s enormous moonstone ring flickered in the candlelight as her hand hovered over the cards. “We must look to the future.”
Grayce couldn’t see the card. She felt light-headed from the burning sweet flag incense or from the ominous energy swirling from the crystal ball.
As she turned over the first tarot card, the large woman’s usual booming voice grew quiet with a mysterious Gaelic lilt. “The Knight of Swords.”
Prickly sensations lifted the fine hair on Grayce’s neck. Mitzi came from under the table and sat next to Grayce’s chair.
Aunt Aideen opened her massive hand to allow Grayce to see the card—a medieval knight in armor on a powerful white horse rode toward a battle in the distance. The horse’s harness was decorated with butterflies and birds. The sky behind him was filled with storm clouds and the trees, tossed wildly by the wind. The knight resembled St. Michael the Archangel.
“The Knight of Swords is hard to resist,” Aunt Aideen intoned.
Davis obviously fit the Knight of Swords. His commanding presence, physical strength, and his commitment to fight crimes made him the perfect archetypal hero.
Heat moved across Grayce’s cheeks in embarrassment. “Davis was hard to resist.” Grayce knew first hand. As a witness to arson, she had been interviewed by the sexy fire investigator and had fallen in love with the irresistible man.
“My nephew, Ewan Davis, is in no way a Knight of Swords. Davis is an Emperor, a man of the logical world, like his Scottish forebears. The Knight of Swords is a messenger, a call for adventure. He does not see, nor does he care about risks or dangers and instead moves forward with his strong determination and strength to succeed, no matter what.
Grayce wasn’t going to discuss Davis’ ability as an adventurous lover with the aunt who had raised him after his mother’s death.
“The knight will call to you from your dreams.” Aunt Aideen’s solemn voice and the shimmering moonstone known for clairvoyance were doing strange things to Grayce’s perceptions. The images in the room faded in and out. The heightened energy from the ball moved in undulating waves.
“His call will challenge you to leave your present way of being.” Aunt Aideen’s eyes were in the shadows, but Grayce felt her focused stare. “The Knight of Swords can also be seen as a warning.”
With the soft burr of Aunt Aideen’s Scottish inflection, the wavering candlelight and the nutty scent of sweet flag, Grayce was floating into deep relaxation.
Aunt Aideen’s voice lost its soothing rhythm. “And it doesn't take a seer to predict that Davis will have trouble with the knight’s appearance in your life. Davis needs to be your protector.”
Grayce came immediately out of her meditative state. Davis tried very hard to control his fear of unforeseen disasters by guarding all those he loved.
“Does the knight have to be human? Maybe I’ll have a new patient?” Grayce asked.
Aunt Aideen kept her eyes closed. Her muted voice was firm. “I see a tall, dark man in a uniform. He holds a gun.”

By the Monday after Thanksgiving, Kate thought she’d go out of her mind. Everyone went back to work and school, and she was alone but for dog Barney, who kept her company at home, since the old guy couldn’t exactly go for long runs anymore. She read a book. She baked the simplest cookies for Ethan after school like he was six, and he humored her, good son that he was. But she caught his worried looks just the same.
She called her lawyer friend Michelle again—no answer. The partners would never reveal details about her sabbatical, but she still felt paranoid. She kept thinking of that report she wasn’t supposed to have seen, and she wished she could talk to someone about it. But obviously her firm didn’t want to listen.
Tuesday, on her late-morning run, she passed by Tony’s Tavern. Without planning it, she turned around and went inside. Compared to Friday night, it was pretty empty, just a couple people starting an early lunch. No one sat at the bar, behind which her ex-husband Tony stood at the POS computer, his back to her, his head bent, unruly brown hair touching the creased collar of his black polo shirt. She felt a momentary need to straighten it. The thought was so shocking that she was about to leave, when he looked up and saw her. She froze, wondering if she’d overstepped her bounds.
He frowned, but he seemed puzzled, not annoyed. It made her feel braver, so she sat down at the bar and pulled off her winter hat and gloves. She casually ran her hands through her hair to straighten it, and he watched her without saying a word.
“Is something wrong?” When his voice emerged with a husky tone, he cleared his throat.
“May I have a glass of water?” she asked lamely. Dammit, why had she come here?
He poured her one from the tap. “Tough workout?”
She nodded. “They always are. I hate running.”
“Then why do you do it?”
“Quick and convenient, keeps me healthy, and holds down the weight.” She held up a hand. “I know, I know, there are ways to have fun and exercise. But this works for me.”
“Do you have any fun, Kate?” he asked softly.
For a moment, she didn’t know how to answer that. “Every weekend when Ethan is with me.”
“No grown-up fun?”
And then she blushed, though she assumed he didn’t mean sex. “I had a pretty good time in here Friday night. I date occasionally at home, too. That’s fun.”
He nodded slowly, almost as if he didn’t believe her. So she added defensiveness to her feelings of panic and desperation.
“I don’t have anything to do,” she finally said in a hushed whisper, her throat tight. “I feel…lost. The thing I’m best at—they won’t let me do, won’t trust my judgment. I’m not even the homemaker type, and I’m cleaning my mother’s house every day. I’m running out of stuff to do. I think I’m driving Ethan nuts—and I don’t mean to! And now here I am driving you nuts. I’m sorry, I should go.”
He looked at her for a long minute, eyes narrowed in thought, but not anger. Still she didn’t go; she only took a long swig of her water.
Then he reached beneath the counter and slid a crumpled apron across to her. “My lunch server, Rhonda—her kid had his appendix out. There’s complications, poor little guy, but he’ll be okay. She’s going to be out a while. Wait tables if you’re so bored.”
She stared at him in shock. There was a faint smirk twisting his lips, as if he expected her to turn him down. He knew she hated serving. It was hard, demanding work, and people were difficult to satisfy.
But…she was alone all day, with not enough to do. She lifted her head and met his gaze with a challenging one of her own. “Are you offering me a job?”
“A temporary one,” he amended, then crossed his arms over his chest. “I don’t think you’ll last.”
She straightened her shoulders. “You’ve gotta be kidding me. I’ve never left a job unfinished.” And then she felt a spasm of worry as she remembered her law career, her marriage—the unfinished things in her life. He started to pull the apron back, and she suddenly grabbed it, looking him fiercely in the eyes. “You’re on.” She heard the words coming out of her mouth and couldn’t regret them, although she wasn’t sure why.

Emma Cane grew up reading and soon discovered that she liked to write passionate stories of teenagers in space. Her love of “passionate stories” has never gone away, although today she concentrates on the heartwarming characters of Valentine, her fictional small town in the Colorado Rockies.

Now that her three children are grown, Emma loves spending time crocheting and singing (although not necessarily at the same time), and hiking and snowshoeing alongside her husband Jim and two rambunctious dogs Apollo and Uma.

Do dreams ever inspire your writing? What did you last dream about?
When I was writing Last Train, I had this crazy dream that I was filming a low-budget indie movie. All I remember is driving this old van over a cliff, Thelma and Louise style. It all happened in slow-mo, and there was this slow, haunting version of Pat Benatar’s “Invincible” playing in the background (yes this dream had an actual soundtrack). It was very The Cure-esque, and to my knowledge no version of this song exists. So I ended up writing it into the scene at the bar when Aubrey first talks to Eric. I googled Pat Benatar just to make sure I had the lyrics right and found out she’s from town of Babylon on Long Island. I had no idea and definitely took it as a sign.
Last night I dreamt that it was two hours before my wedding and I’d forgotten to get my eyebrows waxed. It was stressful.

When did you first start writing? And when were you first published?I wrote my first “book” in first grade. I had this really awesome teacher who would bind them for us. It was about Bats.
I started writing seriously in college. I was a creative writing major at Binghamton, so I took a lot of required fiction workshops. I worked a lot of those stories into Last Train.
I found out I was getting published for the first time a little over a year ago, and Last Train finally comes out this month!

What is it about 'chick lit' that appeals to you the most? Do you read other genres?
I generally read contemporary, realistic fiction, because I like being able to relate to the characters. It’s what I like to write, so I draw inspiration every time I read it. I tend to steer towards books that are character driven and pack an emotional punch. I have a pretty sick sense of humor, so I like anything that can pull off dark comedy. I can also always go for a good mystery or anything psychological.

Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
The day after her ex-best friend’s suicide, 22-year-old Aubrey Glass reluctantly returns to her hometown on Long Island to mourn Rachel, the girl she cut out of her life five years earlier.
In the days leading up to the funeral, and the infamous After Party - which has sort of turned into this bizarre High School reunion - Aubrey finds herself in the midst of a Girl Interrupted-esque meltdown. The book alternates between past and present, slowly revealing Aubrey and Rachel’s complicated relationship and everything that went wrong between the two friends years ago.

What inspired you to write it?
Anxiety has the power to bring out the worst in people, and it’s something I’ve personally struggled with, so that inspired much of Last Train.
On the surface, Aubrey is an unlikeable character. She says and does some really awful things, but underneath it all, she’s really struggling with some dark and confusing emotions. She snappy and rude and uses dark humor as a shield. She’s insecure and hurting, and I wanted to give her a voice. In Aubrey’s mind, she’s surrounded by insensitive jerks. In turn, she’s bitter and angry and comes off just as thoughtless. But there’s more to her story. And everyone deals with their past in different ways. I really wanted to embrace that through her relationship with Rachel.
Rachel and Aubrey have a long-winded history, and they certainly bring out the worst in each other. I’d even say that their friendship turns toxic. We’ve all been there, where we stay in a friendship that breeds negativity because it’s familiar and comfortable. And on top of their own issues and anxieties, they’re both submerged in a culture where slut-shaming and victim-blaming are the norm. In turn, they absorb that mindset themselves. It’s a sad reality that I’ve seen first hand. I wanted to shine light on that dialogue in a real way and show the devastating repercussions.

Have you ever spotted anyone reading your books anywhere?
Not yet!

Who designs your covers?
My publisher and I went through a good number of covers until we found one that everyone really loved. My final cover was designed by Mumtaz Mustafa and the photograph was taken by Ilona Wellmann.

If your latest book was made into a film, who would you cast?

Troian Bellisario in Manila. Cecile Van Straten derivative work: Lpdrew

I always thought Troian Bellisario, a dark-haired Jennifer Lawrence, or Margaret Qualley would all make great Aubreys. I could see Joan Allen as Aubrey’s mother, Karen. Emma Roberts as Rachel maybe. Adam would need to be someone with dark hair and gray eyes -- maybe someone like Douglas Booth.

What's your favourite Chick Lit book that made it to the big screen?
Sex and the City.

What were the last two books you read?
I’m half way through Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham. Before that, I read The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen.

Name one female author who you think deserves to be better known.

Where do you write?
On my couch or the back room of The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? And did you follow the dream?
I’ve always wanted to be a writer, but I didn’t think I had the stamina. So there was a time when I thought I’d be a doctor. I was obsessed with ER as a kid and would read all of my mom’s nursing school books and practice med school interviews in the mirror. I think it made me more of a hypochondriac than anything else. I was also horrible at math and science. I went through a five minute phase my freshman year of college when I announced I’d be an anesthesiologist. My mom was over the moon. Then I got a C - on a test and changed my major to creative writing.

In the movie of your life, who would play you?
Any of the characters I chose for Aubrey, because I kind of wrote her in my own image.

Do dreams ever inspire your writing? What did you last dream about?
Amazingly enough when I’m in the middle of writing a book, I know I’m really in the zone when I start to live the story in my dreams. So, yes my characters actually come alive in my dreams. I often know what they want and how they look thanks to these dream visits.
The protagonists of the story I’m working on had a really heartbreaking fight in my dream last night. I was really sad when I woke up.

When did you first start writing? And when were you first published?
I’ve written pretty much for as long as I can remember. I think I wrote a poem describing the cover of my math text book in first grade instead of doing my math homework. That has to be my first discernible writing memory. I was a rhymer. Rhyming was my game of choice.

What is it about 'chick lit' that appeals to you the most? Do you read other genres? 
It has to be the reliability. Whether it’s a neurotic single girl living in London, or a struggling actress in LA or a homesick Indian girl at an American university, it’s that moment of totally fitting inside her skin and knowing, really knowing exactly what she’s going through that makes chick lit and women’s fiction such a joy to read for me. I read a lot of mainstream commercial fiction and literary fiction and Romance. Those are basically my genres as a reader.

Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
A Bollywood Affair is the story of a child bride from a small village in India who grows up and finds she’s married to the wrong man. Unfortunately, the right man is her husband’s brother and he’s only charming the pants off her to help his brother get rid of her. And much as Mili sounds like someone any modern urban woman could never relate to, she’s just another woman trying to reconcile her upbringing with living her best life.

What inspired you to write it?
It’s actually inspired by a true story. Back in India my parents knew a young couple many years ago. Tragically, the husband died in an air crash just about a year into their marriage and his family from the village showed up with another young woman, who apparently was also his wife. They had been married when they were children. The family claimed all his assets, because his wife, who was now his second wife, wasn’t his wife at all because polygamy is illegal in India.
I just could not get that story out of my head. I couldn’t stop thinking about those two women. One was raised to believe she had a husband, when really she didn’t, and the other had a husband and yet really she didn’t. I absolutely had to write this story and trace the arc of the journeys I imagined for these women. Of course that was just the seed and A BOLLYWOOD AFFAIR is entirely fictional.

Have you ever spotted anyone reading your books anywhere?
Not out in the wild yet, because this is my debut and it’s not in stores yet. But I have been hushed by friends while they were reading it. I even had a friend who continued reading it when I dragged her out for our walk and she said she just couldn’t put it down.

If your latest book was made into a film, who would you cast?

I think Samir would have to be Hrithik Roshan, the Bollywood Star or Josh Duhamel, if a Hollywood actor played the part. And Mili would be someone who looked like Kangana Ranaut (pictured) a Bollywood actress but had the personality of Emma Stone.

What's your favourite Chick Lit book that made it to the big screen?
I love love love The Diary of Bridget Jones. But I really did not like the movie. I have a hard time liking movies based on books I like.

What were the last two books you read?
Never Been Kissed by Molly O’Keefe (loved it!) and This is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper (a lot of fun to read, but in a weird, life-really-sucks way).

Name one female author who you think deserves to be better known.
This is a really hard question. I loved Hanna Martine’s Elementals paranormal series and I was really disappointed that it didn’t become a viral hit. I’ve read a few of Jeannie Lin’s Chinese historicals and loved those too.

Where do you write?
Everywhere. At the kitchen island, outside my kid’s activities sitting in my car in the parking lot, in my sunroom, sometimes even at my desk in my office.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? And did you follow the dream?
I wanted to be a writer but for a long time I thought that was just a pipe dream. So I went to architecture school and worked as an architectural journalist for a while. So I merged my dream with real life for a bit before my dream became real life.

In the movie of your life, who would play you?
Why, Meryl Streep, of course.!
