Say hi to Leah from Chick Lit Reviews and News!

As well as authors, I also love interviewing people in the book blogging world, and today I'm delighted to have the lovely chick lit-loving Leah from http://chicklitreviewsandnews.com !
Do you remember when you first started reading (without the help of your folks!)?
I really don't, not properly. I've racked my brains for ages thinking about when I first started reading. I suspect it was in Primary School, with the reading you have to do as a kid. From there, I got into Jacqueline Wilson and Enid Blyton but I admit to not really remembering until I started reading at 18 with Chick Lit!

What was your favourite book as a child?
Ooh, this is a toughie! I barely remember any of the books I read as a kid (I barely remember *being* a kid hehe) but I would say my absolute favourite kids book was The Suitcase Kid by Jacqueline Wilson. I remember I read it so many times!

What is your favourite genre? What is it about this genre that appeals to you so much?

Chick Lit, without a doubt. It's been my favourite genre since I was 18 or so. It appeals to me because of the romance in it. I love a novel that features a happy ending and 99% of the time a Chick Lit novel will give you a happy ending. However I don't exclusively read Chick Lit - I've broadened my horizons and I now read Young and New Adult, I read the odd crime book, basically if I like the sound of it I'll buy and read it but mostly it's Chick Lit, and I love it.

What's your favourite book that made it to the big screen? When I first read this question my answer was The Hunger Games. The book is amazing (the whole series is, in fact) and the movie was basically like reading the book if that makes sense. It was everything I imagined it would be and I've seen it multiple times! But I must also mention The Help. This book blew me away so much, so unexpectedly so, and the movie was fantastic. It truly should have got an Oscar for Best Picture because it blew my socks off. So it's a tie, I hope that's OK! :)

Name the last three books you read. Did you enjoy them?
Can I cheat and tell you the last four because the fourth last book I read was utterly amazing! Here they are: Model Misfit by Holly Smale (LOVED IT - I want to be Holly Smale), Finding It by Cora Carmack (this book blew me away so badly, the best of Carmack's books so far), The Gravity of Us by Kristen Zimmer (not perfect, had its flaws but it was something entirely different to what I normally read) and Take A Look At Me Now by Miranda Dickinson (like one big love letter to San Francisco and I adooooored it).

Who is your favourite author(s)?
I hate this question! I basically would just like to give you a big long list because there are so many authors who I'd say are my favourites. But I'll try and keep it short. Sophie Kinsella, Paige Toon, Gemma Burgess, Cecelia Ahern, Miranda Dickinson, Melissa Hill, Jane Costello. I've probably missed someone I absolutely adore, but these are generally my go-to authors!

What book couldn't you live without?
Hmmmm, this is a difficult question! That would probably be Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin. I ALWAYS state that this is my absolute favourite book of all-time (though there are others that are tied with it). It's one of the first Chick Lit books I ever read, and it's one I can go back to time and time again and re-read without getting bored. It is truly amazing and it is easily Giffin's best book. It's so good I own three copies of it.

Name one female author you think deserves to be better known.
Gemma Burgess. Gemma Burgess deserves to be on the same par as Sophie Kinsella, Paige Toon and the like. She's the author of three books (so far!) and I think she deserves so much more recognition than she gets. She writes Chick Lit the way it should be written - with unnerving honesty and she is an outstanding talent. If I could go around and give every person in the world a copy of one of her books, I would.

Do you judge a book by it's cover?
All the time! I know we shouldn't, but I LOVE a beautiful book cover. I love making collections of my books all with the same pretty covers (and it then drives me nuts when publishers decide to go in a new direction grrr!). I'll even go so far as to buy a set of books with a new cover even if I already own them (as I did with my Paige Toon collection). Covers are so important and it's the only disappointment when reading on my Kindle - I can't choose a book by its cover, it has to be from what I remember of the book and it's so hard! (Though hopefully less so when I get my new Kindle Paperwhite, yay).

How do you choose your next book?
I've got a shelf on my book case and a list on my notebook of ebooks and I go from there. Because I review books I basically have as good a schedule I can have when it comes to reading/reviewing, I generally don't get to choose spontaneously any more (which is a good thing because when I CAN choose spontaneously, I never know what to read)

What kind of book would you like to read that you haven't seen yet? For example, a dystopian chick lit or sci-fi romantic drama?I would like to read a straight-up Chick Lit book without a love rat ex, they're flipping everywhere! I'd also love a novel that's just a pure romance between a girl and a boy with no stupid separation just before the end of the novel - it always happens!

What irritates you when reading a book?
Oh, many things. A stupid heroine who doesn't know her fingers from her toes. Heroines who get everything they want without having to do a single thing. Heroines who say they're fat when they're not. Men in the novel that WE know are idiots and shouldn't be given the time of day, but the heroine always falls for the idiots. I'm a surprisingly fussy reader. There seems to be certain things you have to tick off if you're a Chick Lit writer, something that must get passed around from author to author and I hate novels that JUST tick off that list and don't do anything more. It's like I can mentally check them off as I'm reading.

Where is your favourite place to read?
I love to read at home. Either in my bed (which I only do in the evenings) or on the settee. I generally have to read where it's quiet because otherwise I can't concentrate, but I have widened my reading horizons and sometimes before work I'll go down to the beach and sit there and read for a bit, it's so beautiful down there!

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
It changed on a regular basis, but the one I remember most of all is air hostess. It is never, ever going to happen now, but that's what I wanted to be. I liked the idea of visiting the world on an aeroplane! Now, I just want to own my own bookshop.

In the movie of your life, who would play you?

Character interview: Meg from Johnny's Girl by Paige Toon

I'm delighted to be interviewing Meg from Paige Toon's latest book, Johnny's Girl, OUT TOMORROW 7th November!!

What's your full name? Do you love it? Or hate it?
Meg Stiles. I've never really had an opinion about it, to be honest, but I did love it when Johnny gave me the nickname, Nutmeg. There was something quite intimate about him doing that.

Who is your best friend?
Bess. She's larger than life and lots of fun - we grew apart once but we're very close now. She was the one person I wanted to turn to when I found out about Johnny's secret daughter - and amazingly, she actually managed to cheer me up.

What do you do for a living? And what's your dream job?
I love being a mum to my two boys, and even though it's not my job title anymore, even though he has an actual personal assistant, I think I'll always be Johnny Jefferson's PA. I look out for him and I always will.

Are you single/married/divorced/looking for love?
I'm married to Johnny Jefferson, one-time bad boy rock star and the indisputable love of my life - but there was a time when I would have done anything to forget all about the bastard! Life has a funny way of working out...

Name one of your all-time favourite books?
Feel: Robbie Williams, by a journalist called Chris Heath. I love Robbie and Take That. I prefer pop to rock music any day - sorry Johnny!

What inspires you?
My husband inspires me. I know that sounds corny, but it's true. Even when he was in a really bad place with drink and drugs, his talent for music and creating a song shone through. I love watching him work, watching him lose himself in his lyrics and playing his guitar. I wish I could play like that.

Where is your favourite place in the world?
Henley in the UK. It's the place we made our home, where we got married, where I fell pregnant with baby number two. When I'm not there, I miss it.

Favourite movie?
Dirty Dancing, and not just because the hot lead male character is called Johnny!

Favourite author?
Christian Pettersson. I have to be loyal to my friend and former boyfriend!

If you could have a dinner party with anyone in the world (alive or dead, real or fictional), who would you choose and why?
Johnny, because I'd want him to share this with me, Michael Hutchence because he was one of the best rock stars of his time and even I cried when he died, Jim Morrison for Johnny because I know he loves him - as long as Jim didn't try to corrupt my man. And for me, Harry Styles and Tom Fletcher from McFly because Johnny hates that I love pop boys and it's fun making him jealous sometimes.

Tell us a random fact about yourself.
I can flare my nostrils like a horse.

Who would play you in the movie about your life?
Someone British with shoulder-length blonde hair and brown eyes. There used to be this girl in Home & Away who looked a bit like me - she was called Meg as well, but she's probably in her forties by now!

Tell us something interesting about where you live.
The cicadas at night chirp really really loudly. At the moment we're in LA, but who knows where we'll be if you ever ask me again...

Say hi to... Paige Toon

Not only is she beautiful, but she's also an awesome author signed to Simon & Schuster. It's Paige Toon!

When did you first start reading Chick Lit?
It depends on the definition of chick-lit! Is Judy Blume’s Forever chick-lit? I still remember how much I enjoyed reading Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones’s Diary and Watermelon by Marian Keyes. They definitely compelled me to read more.

When did you first start writing Chick Lit?
I got my book deal in September 2006 and wrote my first book, Lucy in the Sky, in the next two and a half months.

What is it about this genre that appeals to you the most? Do you read other genres? If so, which?
I love unrequited love stories – especially ones that aren’t too predictable. I want to be totally immersed in a story. I want to want to read, rather than prefer to watch television. I do like other genres. I absolutely love YA sci-fi like The Hunger Games and Twilight. I’m currently devouring The Mortal Instruments – which is pretty much chick-lit in a fantasy world. It’s an perfect unrequited love story.

Name one of your favourite Chick Lit books?
Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding and The Brightest Star in the Sky by Marian Keyes.

What's the title of your latest book? Can you tell us about it?
I have a few things coming up! In November, Johnny’s Girl is being released. It’s an ebook short story sequel to Baby Be Mine, told from the heroine Meg’s point of view when she finds out her husband, rock star Johnny Jefferson, has a teenage daughter. In January, I’m releasing the first of a whole series of YA books about Johnny’s daughter Jessie. The title is: The Accidental Life of Jessie Jefferson. Then, in May, my new chick-lit book will be coming out and that’s called Thirteen Weddings. It’s about a wedding photographer who falls for a groom.

What inspired you to write it?
When I was writing Baby Be Mine, Meg worried that her son might not be Johnny’s only illegitimate child out there – he’s a rock star and he’s had a lot of groupies! I had the idea for Jessie, then – his an ordinary girl who finds out her dad is a megastar.

Is it part of a series?
Jessie is, yes. Book 2 will come out January 2015.

Who designs your covers?
The wonderful art team at Simon & Schuster.

If your book was made into a film, who would you cast?
I’m asked this question all the time and it’s so hard for me to say because my characters are figments of my imagination and not based on anyone. I thought recently that Chris Hemsworth looked like a pretty good Johnny – when he’s not too muscly. I love hearing what my readers think – they tell me on Facebook and Twitter.

What's your favourite Chick Lit book that made it to the big screen?
I hate to sound like a broken record, but Bridget Jones’s Diary!

Who is your all time favourite Chick Lit character?
Clare from Watermelon by Marian Keyes. Marian inspired me to also write about characters who are mentioned in other books – it’s one of the things my readers tell me they most love about my books.

Name one Chick Lit author who you think deserves to be better known.
I recently loved Colleen Hoover’s Slammed – it looks nothing like chick-lit, but it essentially is.

Oh God, I don’t know. I’m half Australian, half British so I’d be lucky to have someone like Isla Fisher, even though we look NOTHING alike!!!

Shopaholic or shopadon't?  Shopaholic
Sky high heels or closer to the ground? Six inch wedges!
E.L. James or Jilly Cooper? EL James
