Author Interview

Can you tell us a little about your latest book?
This Summer is a young adult/new adult crossover that takes place over the summer before Hadley goes to college. She is working at her father’s summer camp when an unexpected blast from her past comes to town. 

How do you come up with character names?
I’m not very original, but I like to use the built-in Character Name Generator in Scrivener and I keep refreshing until a name calls out to me. 

Where is your favourite place to write?
Now that I finally have my own office, I love writing there. I get a lot done when I can close the door and focus on the writing. 

What is your favourite movie that was based on a book?
Pride and Prejudice, the 2005 version. 

 
What are your (writing) plans for the future?
I have 2 more novels and 2 novellas in the works and I hope to continue long after that. 

Favourite myth / fairytale?
I love all the Greek myths. It’s hard to pick just one! 

Who/What did you want to be when you were a kid?
Oh many things, but for the longest time I wanted to be a marine biologist. Mostly to play with otters all day!

Katlyn Duncan was born and raised in a small town in western Massachusetts. Her overactive imagination involved invisible friends, wanting to be a Disney Princess and making up her own stories. Her bibliophile mom always encouraged her love of reading and that stayed with her since. Even though she works full time in the medical field Katlyn has always made time for books, whether she is reading or writing them.
Katlyn now lives in southern Connecticut with her husband and adorable Wheaten Terrier and she is thrilled to finally share her stories with the world.

Obsessed With Fantasy? Yep, That’s Me
Okay, maybe obsessed is too strong a word. I mean, I do have my feet firmly grounded in reality, what with my day job in finance, my mortgage payment, and all the associated responsibilities of being a wife, mother, and homeowner. Why, at the aforementioned day job, I arrive wearing pantsuits and sensible shoes, and report to meeting upon meeting with alacrity. I even submitted a proposal to make our 1-800 number’s phone tree more user friendly.
Is it any wonder I need a bit of fantasy in my life?
However, my wicked boring day job is exactly what led to my urban fantasy series, Copper Legacy. The first book, Copper Girl, came out in June 2013, and Copper Ravens, which I’m currently touring for, is hot off the presses.
Don’t believe that a position at a Fortune 100 company could lead to a badass fantasy series? Gather round, and I’ll tell you how it happened.
I was toiling away at the insurance company (not the awesome company I currently work for, but another that was, shall we say, less awesome), freezing my fricken’ butt off. Why was I so cold, you ask? Because they cranked the AC to Arctic. I mean, it was 86 degrees outside, and 50 inside. How is that even allowed?
Anyway, I escaped the frigid air during my lunch break, and napped in my car. I know, super exciting. But, as I sat in my car I looked at a tree that was impossibly two trees twined together, pines wrapped in a lover’s embrace. I wondered if the tree wasn’t a portal to the otherworld, so magnificent it was.
Those of you who’ve read Copper Girl know that that’s almost exactly how Sara’s adventure started, idly wondering if the mundane wasn’t something…more. What that more might be, I can’t really say. More in depth, more involved, maybe even more than just this world.
Ok, maybe I am a bit fantasy obsessed. Is that so bad?
