My fingers brushed against the wooden box. I pulled it out. A slight tingle vibrated through my fingers. Not unpleasant, still it felt as if I’d shocked myself. I gasped, dropping the box.

Until You - The Idea
The inspiration for Until You came from a Season 1 episode of Nashville, where Hayden Panettiere’s character, Juliette Barnes, is set up with a straight-laced football player to help improve her public image.
Yes, this is now the second book I’ve written where the inspiration came from Nashville. What can I say? I was obsessed those first two seasons. I watched them non-stop and the soundtrack was on repeat on my iPod. I have since sought help, i.e. moved onto other shows to obsess over. There’ll be a book about a girl handing out roses to all the boys she likes until there’s only one left standing coming soon. Kidding!!
That storyline in Season 1 was one of my favourites and I found myself watching those episodes again and again until one day the voice of Ellie popped into my head. To my surprise she wasn’t a popstar or famous actress, but an ordinary girl from a normal upbringing and with a normal life.
At the time I was working on a potential follow up to my previous novel, A Distant Voice, so I tried to ignore her. She was a persistent thing though and it wasn’t long before she had company. The moment I heard Jason’s voice I was a goner. They weren’t going anywhere until I’d written their story.
Plus, I have to admit, I was super intrigued by the idea of fake relationships in Hollywood. And I was curious as to what goes into these relationships. I imagine contracts in place, photo opportunities, PR stunts and I couldn’t write a story about it all without taking into account how social media plays such a huge role in winning the public over. One of the key elements in Until You is how effective social media can be, even when it’s not entirely truthful.
Another source of inspiration for me is music. I listen to music when I walk to work, at work, walk the dog, drive, write, cook. Any chance I get, really! It could just be a lyric, or the entire song, that gets me thinking of a particular scene or character. There was one song that I kept going back to while writing Until You. ‘Will You Love Me Tomorrow’ by Carole King. The lyrics really resonated with the character of Jason, and his fears that people only want the movie star and not the person.
I’d never attempted a story like Until You before. A Distant Voice had tackled some heavy subjects and the idea of writing a romance was foreign to me, but I was so giddy about these two characters that I dove in head first and never looked back.
I toyed with the idea of basing the book solely in LA and that lasted all of a second! I’m a romantic and I love to travel. Sending them on a whirlwind trip overseas was a no brainer and it allowed me the opportunity to show the world of 5 star hotels and restaurants, and red carpet treatment from the eyes of a seasoned professional and a complete novice. Things that Jason took for granted were experiences someone like Ellie would never have the opportunity to do. And I wanted to explore how someone who was new to the world of celebrity would cope with suddenly being thrust into the spotlight.
Plus it gave me an excuse to scroll through all my old holiday photos from Paris, London and New York in the name of research instead of sadly reminiscing about holidays past and wishing I was back there! That is what we call living through our characters:)
For a genre I’d never written in before, I have to say that I had a blast. I’ve honestly never had so much fun writing a story. Ellie is a really refreshing character who is still so innocent and naive in a lot of aspects, and Jason, while a few years older than Ellie, often comes across as the immature one in the relationship. But they both have such big hearts and a real desire to be accepted for who they are, faults and all.
I hope that people find them, and their story, as endearing as I do.

The Excerpt
I pulled my head back. “You’re not sleeping in here,” I mumbled as I tried to keep my lips as close together as possible.
He grinned slowly, his dark eyes fixing on mine as he inched his face closer. “What happened to me nursing you?” The trace of alcohol on his breath made my stomach roll.
“That was all Lacey. Go to your own room.” I placed my hands on his chest and pushed, but it was such a weak attempt he didn’t seem to notice.
“What are we watching?” He pulled my laptop closer toward him. “Oh, it is Friends? Great, I haven’t watched this in years.” He rolled onto his back and crossed his hands behind his head with a wink. His shirt had ridden up, and my eyes traveled down to the smooth patch of skin showing. Was it still as soft as the last time he was shirtless? Not that he was shirtless now. He’d only revealed a tiny patch of skin. And no way was I touching him to see how soft it was. “Just a couple of episodes and then I’ll go back to my room. Deal?”
I dragged my eyes away from his stomach. “Fine. But no touching.”
His nose wrinkled as shifted away from me. “And risk you throwing up on me? No, thank you. I’ll stay on my side.”
I pushed a pillow between us as a barrier. “If you so much as put a hair over this line you’re in big trouble.”
“You’re the one we should worry about. Don’t think I’ve forgotten how much you ogled me that night in your kitchen.”
“Ogled?” I stammered. “Who even says that?”
“Don’t try to change the subject. You’re attracted to me, and you know it,” he slurred, a slow smile taking hold of his face.
“I bet you think every girl in the world is attracted to you.”
He laughed and rolled onto his side again, his eyes drilling into me. “Not every girl. Just you.”
“You’re drunk.” I gently nudged his shoulder, hoping he’d roll back over and quit staring at me. Of course, I was attracted to him. I had eyes, didn’t I? But I wasn’t stupid enough to fall for his act. I knew guys like him. I’d dated guys like him. One minute I was the most important person in the world, the next he chose girls like Natalie Miller.
“Just a little,” he whispered and settled onto his back. “I don’t need every girl to be attracted to me. Just you, fake girlfriend.”
“Be quiet and let me watch Friends, fake boyfriend,” I said, desperate to end this conversation before it headed into dangerous territory.
“Your wish is my command. From now on I’ll be the best fake boyfriend you’ve ever had.”
“Shh,” I hissed and pointed at my laptop. I rolled my eyes as he mimicked zipping his mouth closed and tossing away the key. We’d see how long his promise of being committed to our “relationship” lasted.

Have you always been intrigued by Atlantis? Why?
Centuries ago an author with a political motivation, Plato, spoke of a great battle on the ocean between the historic state of Athens and the fabled Atlantis. This mighty nation in his story is said to have been more advanced than the great Athens and to have been blessed by the gods of old. He even comments on the possibility these were actually children of the gods themselves. Such a distinction in Plato’s day would impress upon his readers that Atlantis was truly a mighty force. That kind of might would be something challenging to a city known to be as strong as Athens, and this better identifies why the achievement of sending Atlantis packing was important. But these are the tales of a fantastic author who has captured the imagination of millions for centuries.
Since his time, many have speculated on which city or island nation he could have based the idea on. Based on his account, we know that Plato talks about Atlantis sinking around the year 7490 BCE. That’s more than 9000 years before he was born. In the same series of stories, he speaks of both the Celts and the Amazons attempting to invade the island nation and failing. This added to his explanation of their strength and resilience. It also adds to the timeframe in which the nation that inspired Atlantis may have existed. Over the centuries speculation has referenced civilizations from ancient Egypt to ancient civilizations resembling the Mayans.
Because most authors do base some information on things they know, even if only loosely, it stands to reason there was some form of Atlantis in historical existence. What form did it take? Why didn’t Plato ever reveal this city? Why does it tantalize our imaginations today? Part of that can be based on the fact shs descriptions were very specific, and his location of this continent existed. That alone has sent historians on a hunt for this lost civilization of greatness.
For me, it offered the best protection available to an advanced civilization of humanoid tribes needing to get away from homo-sapien fear and reaction. The historical mystery that surrounds Atlantis has lent itself to many books, imaginations, and opened the door to many unique possibilities. Knights of the Immortals is only the newest series in the quest to answer the mystery that is Atlantis.

About the Author:
Martine Lewis is a forty something who was born and raised in the French speaking province of Quebec, Canada. All throughout high school, Martine wrote more bandfictions and some original work, then she went to write fanfictions in the Star Wars, Buffy and Harry Potter universes. Her fanficiton in the Potterverse are mostly centered on characters of her own creation and can be found on fanfiction.net. Stephan slid his bow from his shoulder and fitted an arrow to the string. 

‘Caliban and I will follow behind. Just as a precaution, of course – in case you start getting any ideas in that ugly gray head of yours.’ 

Quentin Marks’ welcoming committee was not something I’d anticipated. I gathered my bags, and Phillipe led our unpleasant little party across the Sutallee Bridge. I unconsciously slowed as we passed over the abandoned mine shaft where Josephine and I had taken refuge so long ago. 

There was a sharp poke in the middle of my back, right between my pent wings. 

‘Move it,’ Stephan said, jabbing me again. ‘We’re already late for lunch.’ 

I fought the insanely strong desire to whirl around and shove the arrow down his throat. Instead, I bit my lip, tasting coppery blood, and picked up my pace. We reached the iron fence that surrounded the Fairgrounds. Phillipe pulled out a ring of keys and opened the gate. I’d assumed everything would look as it had the last time I’d been within the walls of the Circe de Romany. But there were no tents or pavilions. No rides or decorations, either. Only trailers – along with several RVs, trucks, and buses – arranged in a tight circle right in the middle of the property. Their configuration created a large open space in the center of the caravan. Tarps were arranged over tables and chairs. A fire pit had been built, and laundry hung from clotheslines spread between trailers. People bustled around the clearing, preparing for the approaching storm. Another peal of thunder echoed overhead. The clouds had thickened and the sky looked ready to split apart at any moment. 

‘Hurry it up,’ said Stephan with another jab to my back. ‘I don’t intend to get wet.’ Lightning flashed. Women scurried to get the clothes off the lines while men anchored the tarps more securely in the ground. Phillipe led me to a small trailer and flung open the door. 

‘Get inside.’ 

The howling wind was motivation enough – even without Stephan’s sharp arrow in my back – and I scampered up the steps. My nose instantly wrinkled at the unpleasant smell. Phillipe caught my look. ‘The dog trailer,’ he said. 

‘Just be glad they’re out on patrol,’ said Stephan with a malicious laugh. ‘They’re quite territorial.’ The Marksmen backed me into the stinky enclosure, weapons drawn. 

‘We’ll come for you when Nicolas returns,’ said Phillipe. ‘Until then, welcome home.’ With that, he slammed the door, locking me inside.

What's your fascination with YA dystopian?
I love YA dystopian when the protagonist is a strong, relatable, and believable female with something special and different that she can offer to the dysfunctional world in which she lives.
The most well-known and popular YA heroine of the dystopian worlds is Katniss Everdeen. And why wouldn’t see be? She’s an independent, strong-willed survivalist whose “kill or be killed” philosophy wins her a home in the Victor’s Village. She endures any hardship to protect the ones she loves, and before the games, having spent the majority of her life keeping her family alive, she’s ignorant when it comes to romance despite that fact that two guys are vying for her attention.
Katniss is kick ass with her superior archery skills and the guts to go against the president, but she is also real. There’s no insta-love in The Hunger Games trilogy. Katniss’s feelings for Peeta develop over a series of time and a myriad of life or death struggles. And in the end, there is no living “happily ever after.” While the reader journeys with Katniss on the page or on the screen, there’s weeping, rooting, celebrating, and fighting – everything to keep the reader on edge and entertained.
Veronica Roth’s Divergent series holds the same magical combination of a lethal YA heroine, Tris Prior, who is twisted in a plot of rebellion, danger, and eventually romance – all within a believable, futuristic world.
Katniss and Tris are at the top of my list of favorites when it comes to YA heroines in dystopian worlds. Set within a degraded society that is headed for self-destruction, these mentally and physically tough girls face struggles that today’s females can’t begin to understand.
But at the same time, their hardships parallel that of a 21st-century female, making these young heroines relatable to the reader. Interpersonal relationships are the same in both worlds. Like the modern teen girl, through the good times and the bad, these heroines discover who they can trust, and who they can’t, along with who will support them and who will want to bring them down instead.
Romance and the process of falling in love are also the same in both reality and the written page of the YA dystopians I enjoy, though the stumbling blocks of high-school gossip, step parents, and who to go to the prom with are replaced with crooked governments, the lack of individual independence, and “big brother” – everything to capture our imaginations and take these dystopian teens to the next level.
When I wrote the Van Winkle Project trilogy, I definitely kept all of these factors in mind when it came to creating a unique dystopian world armed with a selfless and bad-ass, take-no-crap YA heroine who, through the unimaginable trials of a dystopian world, will stop at nothing, even risk her own life, to save humanity.
YA dystopians are truly extraordinary with their out-of-this-world challenges coupled with the same personal problems that today’s young adults face. That’s why I love YA dystopians and why I wrote the Van Winkle Project series.

Michael was the only good thing to come out of my awakening. I didn’t know how long we’d have together, but I realized I wanted to make every second with him count. Twisting to face him, I brought my right leg to the other side of his body and kissed him gently at first, and then a little harder as he brought his hands to my back, massaging his fingers against my shoulder blades. His lips moved to my neck, and he slid his hand through the hair at the base of my head. I lay against him, savoring his warm breath at my throat as his chest pressed against mine.
“Duck!”
Cradling my body, he scrambled to the floor, bringing me down with him.
“What?” I whispered.
“I saw something outside. A shadow. It looked like a person.”
“Victoria! I need to get her.”
Crawling on my hands and knees, I entered the living room and picked up my sleeping baby.
“Behind the couch. Let’s go.” 
“Watch her,” I said, and rested her on the floor next to Michael. Drawing the laser pistol from my waist, I scooted to the edge of the couch where I could see the back door.
“I locked it,” he whispered, “but any Security guard or SEC can open it.”
The door slid open. I aimed my pistol, my arms and hands trembling.

How did it feel when you typed The End after writing the last chapter in Restoration?
Over the past few months, I’ve been asked this question a lot. I feel like there should be an easy answer: sad, happy, relieved, afraid. The truth is, I feel all of those things and so much more. Maybe this is what it’s like when you send your graduating child off to college, knowing they no longer need you to hold their hand on the first day. You’ve given them love, support, and the proper foundation to be the best person they can be. You’re beaming with pride and happiness, yet at the same time, you’re devastated to watch them grow. It’s hard to close the chapter on your presence in their everyday lives. It’s sad to know they no longer need your everyday guidance and hand-holding. They’ve got this!
Goodbyes are never easy. Stepping away from these characters, and this story, is no exception. A few years ago, the voices of Asher and Eve infiltrated my head in a spellbinding way. I was captivated by their demand to be heard and moved by the story they asked me to tell. Never did I imagine, in all my wildest dreams, that they would enthrall readers hearts and souls in the same way as they mesmerize mine. For that, I’m so grateful. In writing this series I have found my literary voice. My love. My passion. Yet, here we are, at the final chapter on Eve and Asher’s journey. They’re ready to take on the world. For that, I’m happy and relieved. If I’m being honest, maybe even a little afraid. I’m proud, so proud that I did it and that they did it. I wrote a story I love and characters that touch readers.
